I say ‘tomato’ you say ‘la tomate’

Back to the latest news

I remember being quite fluent in French at high school, but since my last lesson was about 25 years ago I can only remember the basics. So on a recent trip to Paris I made sure to take my Android smart phone with the latest version of the Google Translate app installed with me just in case.

I found the app very easy to use and was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked, allowing for both spoken and typed phrases to be translated. It currently supports about 30 different languages including the common European ones such as French and even more obscure languages such as Welsh. One particularly good feature is the ability to download and install one or more languages so that you can still use the app when an internet connection is not available (when visiting Wales for example).

What’s even more impressive about Google Translate is that you can even embed it into your website and have it translate any web page on the fly, in real-time. And you can do it remarkably easily too.

Simply paste the following meta tag before the closing head tag of the page:

<meta name=”google-translate-customization” content=”45f921905667a2ad-e19efb12634cc716-g06679303317d669e-f”></meta>

Then add the following markup and JavaScript block where you would like the translate widget to appear on the page:

<div id=”google_translate_element”></div><script type=”text/javascript”>
function googleTranslateElementInit() {
new google.translate.TranslateElement({pageLanguage: ‘en’, layout: google.translate.TranslateElement.InlineLayout.SIMPLE}, ‘google_translate_element’);
</script><script type=”text/javascript” src=”//”></script>

And that’s about it. Simple eh? To get started, visit the Google Translate home page at
