April fools (1st April), that one day a year every person is slightly sceptical of everything they hear, especially from businesses. Long gone are the days of whoopee cushions and here to stay are the false news stories, fake products and a whole lot of cats.
Google have become an expectation to see what they do each year. Back in 2000 Google performed their first google hoax asking searchers to project a metal image of what they wanted to search for. The user was then displayed a humorous error message such as ‘Error 01: Brainwaves received in analog. Please re-think in digital.’, ‘Error 005: Searching on this topic is prohibited under international law.’ and ‘Error: Insufficient conviction. Please clap hands 3 times, while chanting “I believe” and try again.’.
Sony launched Sony Animalia Headphones for pets last year. This range included Sony K9 4K TV that ‘that maximizes the use of blue and yellow tones without red and green tones in order to make it easier for dogs to view their favorite content in full 4K resolution.’, Sony M3-OW KittyCans and Cat Cans on Music Unlimited and in-cage speakers.
Twitter launched their two tier model. Twttr would now replace the free service but you cannot use vowels or you can continue to use conventional Twitter but at $5 a month.
Virgin along with many other businesses use April Fools as a viral promotional tool for an actual product or service they are releasing. Virgins glass bottomed planes were announced to coincide with the start of Virgin Atlantic Airways first ever domestic service to Scotland. Google also uses this scheme which once resulted in the new service gmail to be considered a prank as the one gigabyte of storage was unthought of at the time.
The guardian released their new glasses Guardian Goggles: because life’s too short to think for yourself. The glasses let users see either liberal or conservative augmented realities.
