The third largest economy in Europe, France comes seventh in the global league table for online sales with revenue of US$67 billion in 2021. Online penetration is 69% which means that percentage of the adult population have made a website purchase over the past year. With 93.6% of the population having a broadband connection, the French are considered to be very ‘internet savvy’ with smartphone penetration of 77%.

Purchases are almost exclusively made by card or Paypal with the pan-EU SEPA system often used to collect recurring payments. Whilst Shopify is a popular ecommerce platform in France, the market is quite fragmented with a number of solutions vying for leadership, including Prestashop, Oxatis and Big Commerce.

With an increase of 14%, the French eCommerce market contributed to the worldwide growth rate of 29% in 2021. Online sales continue to rise and there is an emergent business culture that is encouraging entrepreneurism, particularly in the 18-30 age bracke .

Market expansion in France is expected to continue over the next few years, with a predicted 5% compound annual growth as indicated by the Statista Digital Market Outlook. Compared to the year-on-year growth rate, this slow-down suggests a moderately flooded market but nonetheless one that still has significant headroom for growth 

By nature, the French are cautious and online purchases are secured through trust and assurance of service. An average website conversion rate of 1.1% in the country lags behind larger markets such as Germany (2.2%) and UK (1.9%) and cross-border sales (French purchases from foreign websites) are tracking at the 25% mark which suggests those online retailers distributing their goods from within France are at a major advantage.

In response to predominantly US-driven sales events such as Black Friday and Prime Day, France does things differently! Driven by six of the largest ecommerce players, ‘French Days’ are week-long promotion periods, growing in popularity with recent surveys suggesting 43% of those questioned would be likely to make an online purchase.

In common with most major European nations, Amazon.fr is the leading marketplace with US$5.9bn of revenue in 2021. However, that is where the similarities end as the rest is a carve up with France-only websites such as Cdiscount, Veepee, Auchan and FNAC taking the other Top 5 spots.

France is known for its style and the largest market segment for online purchases is Fashion, accounting for 29% of revenue. This is followed by toys, Hobby and DIY (21%), Electronics and Media (20%) Furniture & Appliances (16%) and Food & Personal Care (14%).

In France, by far the largest carrier is La Poste which trades under brands including Colissimo, Delivengo and Chronopost. Offering delivery through La Poste is almost expected by consumers and a major contributor to their trust and confidence in an online retailer.

Parcel delivery through Pick Up and Drop Off (‘PUDO’) locations is very popular in France and the country is considered an international leader in this field. Ordered goods are delivered to local shops such as supermarkets or petrol stations, from where they can be collected by consumers. This assures consistent, sustainable service quality and first time delivery every time.
